I put my music on, I paddle, I feel free, I love it !
Jose: My name is Jose Antonio Valenzuela I'm from Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico, I'm an electronic engineer specialized in health and safety. I have two jobs, I work for the government in this field from 7:00am to 3:00pm and 4:00pm to 10pm I am swimming instructor, so I have to train early at 4:30am to 6:00am. I started with longboard because of a friend used to practice, I bought him a shabby longboard almost broken then I bought an arbor pintal 46 '' I liked a lot (I have to say that in my city they are like 10 people that use longboards, I'm the only one using a stick. I knew street stand up paddle surfing the net, I found a guy dancing on a bombora with a Kahuna stick, I was impressed (https://youtu.be/U_9bfFqP9lc ) I searched more about Kahuna. I was thinking about buying a kahuna stick and the bombora board, but then I looked I video of Hamboards, “called how to choose your Hamboard” . I was excited about I have one, I saved money an I bought the classic Hamboard with the Street Ssweeper and I started SSUP and I love it !
Yenny: Do you call it SSUP or land paddling?
Jose: I call it street stand up paddle (SSUP), because I like that name and some people here in Mexico don't know about SUP. I prefer say all the expressions of the sport and explain it to the others.
Yenny: Where do you prefer to ride?
Jose: Here in Hermosillo (my city) there are not many places where to practice but I use to go to the baseball stadium, Costco parking and some time I use to go to my work or around the city and parks. The streets here are in a bad shape, there is not many bike lanes and the cars don’t care about the riders, so it is very dangerous practice around the streets of Hermosillo.
Yenny: You have mentioned to me that you will attend the Adrenalina Skate Marathon in November 2015. Can you tell the reader a little bit about it.
Jose: The Adrenalina Skate Marathon https://www.facebook.com/The-Adrenalina-Skateboard-Marathon-155345477884304/?fref=photo , is a 26.2 mile race with skateboards set to promote health, fitness and action sports, the next race is taking place on Saturday November 7th 2015 at Fiesta Island, Mission Bay in San Diego California. The race consists of six laps around Fiesta Island in Mission Bay, with the top winners sharing a product giveaways from the greatest and latest in the skate industry. There is also an SUP (Stand Up Paddle) Division for those that will like to bring your sticks and push around the Island. There's a 3:30 hour time limit to complete the 26.2 mile race. Well I started last week training to 4:40am to 6:00am I don't have other opportunity because I work all day, I'm trying to train at least 5 days per week. I started with 7 miles and yesterday 10 miles. I hope to improve my times soon. I'm using The WestSSUP transporter and the WestSSUP rattan street paddle (yellow flex). I'm using westssup board and Paddle because they are made by ride's (Deejay Pascua, Jeremiah De Sings, Daniel Cambay) I think they are the best ssup riders so I trusted in that an now I think I have the best paddle and longboard of the market and I'm very happy with that. The board is very smooth in spite of the bad roads of my city, is very stable but you can carve and pump easily, when I use the Paddle I feel the difference with the street sweeper, I feel like all my body is exercising not only my back and shoulders. I read your book Yenny and I love it, the book help me to choose to Westssup because the tips of other riders.
Yenny: What are the benefits with SSUP/Land Paddling for you?
Jose: I stopped my training because my two jobs, but the time that I used to train I noticed more strength in my arms, legs, back. I have to said that I have a slipped disc and I have back pains but I can to this sport and is good to strengthening for my back muscles. In other way is awesome I put my music on, I paddle, I feel free, I love it ! I have a lot of fun and while I'm exercising.
Yenny: Is there anything else you would like to say?
Jose: I like the Street Stand Up Paddle community. They are very gentle and I good friends. They gave me a lot advice's like Skeightsup and DeeJay Pascua.
I am a lonely wolf here in Mexico, hahaha I am the only one who practice the Street Stand Up Paddle here. I want to bring this sport to my city.
